Southern Upland Way

The Southern Upland Way is designated one of Scotland’s Great Trails, and indeed it was Scotland’s first coast to coast long distance walking route. It goes from Portpatrick on the west coast to Pease Bay on the east coast, a total distance of 347km. There is a useful guide: The Southern Upland Way; Scotland’s Coast to coast trail, by Alan Castle.

The Southern Upland Way passes through the Lammermuir CC area from the west from Twin Law Cairns, one of its best-known viewpoints from where you can see the Lammermuirs and beyond to the Eildon Hills and the Cheviots, to Ellemford, on the way to Abbey St Bathans to the east.

The Riverside Bakehouse, in Abbey St Bathans, is a small bakery and cafe which offers handcrafted slowly fermented sourdough bread and a range of delicious seasonal cakes, soups and salads with focus on local produce. It is an excellent re-fuelling stop for walkers and cyclists. Winter opening hours: Friday-Sunday 10 AM – 4 PM.
